Internationall Weightlifting Guru Visitng BYU

The BYU throwers are excited about Rickard Nilsson coming this weekend to workout and do some coaching for us. For those of you who don't know who Rickard Nilsson is, his bio is posted below. Rickard is a former Olympian in weightlifting and is now the head strength and conditioning coach for all Swedish Olympic sports. He is an old friend of the Arrhenius' and has visited Provo before. We will post pictures and videos from his stay later.

Rickard Nilsson

Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Swedish Olympic Committee for 10+ years

Rickard has been competing or coaching at the world-class level for nearly 30 years. After 17 years of competition at the highest level, Rickard began training professional teams in hockey and soccer as well as helping world cup skiers. His success with these athletes, along with developing a very practical testing system, led to his hire by the Swedish Olympic Committee in order to better prepare the Swedish Olympians for competition as well as to improve the development of future Olympians. Rickard has had tremendous success. Athletes under his training regimen have set several world records in track and field and many Olympic medals in many sports. In addition, Rickard has trained several skiing world cup champions, championship teams in professional hockey and soccer, and many other athletes who have won major championships. He is sought after by many professional athletes and teams for his training expertise and is often a speaker at Governing Body conventions in Sweden and other countries for all sports.

Rickard’s background as an athlete:

* 2 Time Olympian in weightlifting (’88 and ’92)
* Competed in 17 World Championships

Posted below is some lifting from this past week.

According to Tony Dziepak "THE THROWERS PAGE" we are ranked as the fourth best throwing program in the NCAA last year. On his website (http://throwerspage.110mb.com/) he explains the formula for determining the rankings. I have no doubt we can do better next year! Here is the top ten rankings..

School officially started yesterday. We had our first day of classes and also our first team meeting. Today we have physicals and later on in the week we have more meetings. Practice is still going on but won't officially start until next week. Later on in the week we will be posting our new schedule and also new pictures of the throwers team. A season preview will also in the works. Posted below our some pictures of our locker room and lounge....enjoy

Niklas Arrhenius: Double Sweden-Finland Champion

Nik won the discus and shot put this last weekend at the Sweden-Finland dual meet. Niklas threw 19.48 in shot put and 62.76 in discus. The discus conditions weren't the best as there was a strong tailwind. He beat some good competition including Robert Haggblom and Jimmy Nordin in shot put and Franz Kruger and Mikko Kyrro in discus. Congrats!

8/24/10

Blaine Baker

Blaine Baker is coming off a very good outdoor season. He has a pr of 70.29 and earned an All-American award. He is also a MWC champion in javelin. Here is a video of his power clean pr.

Coming Soon...

Our 2010-2011 Track and Field Schedule should be finalized soon and I will post it on the blog as soon as I find out. Also I will be writing a season preview on the throwers squad for the up coming year. Be sure to check back often for updates on training, competitions, videos etc.

Niklas Arrhenius Double Swedish Champion

Nik competed this past weekend at the Swedish Championships held in Falun, Sweden. Nik was the favorite in both shot put and discus and ended up winning both by large margins. Niklas threw 19.25m in the shot put and 63.87m in the discus. The organizers of the meet decided to hold the shot put competition in the main square of the town kind of like a mini "Big Shot" competition. Niklas started throwing the shot put again this winter after a 3 year lay off and has accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. He has a season best of 19.75m which is also an outdoor pr for him. The 63.87m is a season best which is really good considering coming back from 2 foot injuries the last year.

New Feature

I added a link to a new part of the byu throwers blog. If you notice on the left side, under the Y picture there is a link to stats and records for the BYU throwers. I'm still compiling more of the records and stats and it should all be done in the next week. Also I'm going to add a link to current and former byu thrower bios. When it's all done it should be pretty cool! Check it out!

8/20/10

COLBY BARBER

Here is a video of colby barber squatting. At the time this was his pr for a double. Colby had acl surgery a year ago and recently returned from an LDS mission. He had a good comeback last year breaking his pr in shot put and discus outdoors. Colby should improve a lot this coming season and impress a lot of people.

8/18/10

Jill Camerena-Williams New PR

Jill Camerena-Williams is a current BYU graduate student and volunteer coach for the women's track team. Her husband Dustin is also the Athletic Trainer for the cross country and track and field teams at BYU. She threw a new pr at the Zurich Diamond League Meet. Here is a video of her pr taken by Martin Bingisser.

Sean Richardson PR Throw

Because school hasn't started yet I decided to just post the videos of all the throwers pr's for the time being. this is Sean Richardson's pr throw in the javelin at 71.84. Sean had amazing season last year earning an All-American award and pr'ing by 6 meters.

8/16/10

The Curse Continues

Another thrower on the BYU throw's team had surgery recently. Aaron Clark had a screw put in his wrist, and a plate and 7 screws in the collar bone.

8/12/10

Oliver's Hammer PR

This is a video of Oliver Whaley's pr throw at the NCAA regionals this past season.

8/11/10

Niklas Arrhenius new outdoor shot PR

Niklas Arrhenius a former byu thrower and current manager for our team, threw a personal record in the shot put yesterday in Goteborg, Sweden.

8/7/10

Curse of the Cougar Throwers?

This summer two of us throwers have had surgery. Recently I had an emergency appendectomy which came at the worse possible time, and earlier on in the summer Sean had two compartmental surgeries done on both legs. Hopefully this is the last of the problems we have!

BYU LANDS GREAT THROWING RECRUIT

The BYU throwers are excited to welcome their newest recruit Zach Stetler from Elko, Nevada to the group. Zach is a great all around thrower and will contribute greatly to the team. Zach has high school pr's of 61' in the shot put and 186'10" in the discus. He was a double winner at the Golden West invite and also had a strong showing at Jr. Nationals throwing 18.10 with the 6k shot put and 54.80 with the 1.75 discus. Zach has been coached by a former byu thrower Mike Louisiana and hopefully can bump his coach down a few spots on the all time list at byu. :)
